Things You Should Know About The Indian Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Kailash Satyarthi

Kailash Satyarthi from India has become only the second Indian to win the Nobel peace prize, and the 7th overall. He shares the prize with 17-year-old Malala Yousafzay, from Pakistan

1. Born in Madhya Pradesh; An Engineer by Qualification
Kailash Satyarthi was born in Vidisha, in Madhya Pradesh where up to the age of 26 he pursued the dream of becoming an engineer, only to realize he was destined for greater things.

2. Founder of Bachpan Bachao Andolan
Kailash Satyarthi is the founder of the Bachpan Bachao Andolan, which was founded in 1983.
The organization was established to fight and raise awareness about the exploitation of children forcefully thrust into the world of manual labour.

3. He Has Helped Rescue and Rehabilitate Thousands of Children
After having left his engineering job, Satyarthi has continuously worked to save children from forced labour and the many atrocities from day to day life. He has managed in the course of things to rescue and rehabilitate nearly 80,000 children.

4. His Life Has Been Under Threat
Over the course of his life, Satyarthi has survived many attacks on his life, the most recent being in the year 2011, when he along with his team, was attacked while trying to rescue child labourers from a slum in Delhi.

5. Was Honored By the US President
Satyarthi has been honored by former US president Bill Clinton for being included in "Speak truth to Power", a book by Kerry Kennedy, who lists the life and struggles of the top 50 human rights activists in the world.

6. Has Won Many Awards
Apart from the Nobel Prize, Satyarthi has also won a host of other prestigious awards. Most notable among these are: Defenders of Democracy award (US), Medal of the Italian Senate, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung award (Germany), and the Alfonso Comin International Award (Spain).

7. A Family Man
Satyarthi lives in New Delhi, with his two children, wife and the countless children he has helped rescue from the barbaric world of child labour.

8. An Exceptional Indian
Kailash Satyarthi is only the 7th Nobel laureate from India and only the second to win the Nobel Peace Prize after Mother Teresa. He has also campaigned for equity in education and various other issues over his 3 decades of activism.
